About Phizantekraal
In 1698 Governor Simon van der Stel Granted the farm Groot Phesantekraal to it’s first owner Captain Oloff Berg. By 1756, 40 000 vines had already been established. In 1897 the Brink family acquired the farm. Anna'de'Koning 1657-1733s
2012-02-26
Anna de Koning`s story is one of triumph and perserverance. From humble beginnings as the daughter of a slave, she became a socialite in the Cape of Good Hope during the 17th Century. Her mother, Engela of Bengal, worked in the household of Jan van Riebeeck and it was there that Anna`s beauty captured the heart of Captain Olof Bergh, a distinguished employee of the VOC.s
Anna and captain Bergh, married in 1676, and together they farmed land on Phizante Kraal, granted to them by Simon van der Stel. Following the death of her husband in 1724, Anna inherited Groot Constantia and continued to lead a free and prosperous life until her death in 1733.
